Find answers to frequently asked questions about our driving school programs and Wisconsin driver's license requirements.

General

How old do I need to be to start taking driver education classes?

All students must be at least 14 ½ years of age to take the 30 hour classroom or online course at Bay Driving Academy.

How old do I need to be to get my instruction permit?

Per the State of Wisconsin DOT, you must be at least 15 years of age to obtain your instruction permit.

What are the minimum course requirements a student under 18 must complete to obtain a Class D Probationary Drivers License?

Per the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WI DOT), students under 18 must complete a 30-hour driver education course (classroom or online), 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, and 6 hours of in-car observation time.

What is the next step after I complete the 30-hour course?

Upon completion of the 30-hour course, we will issue you an MV3001 form once you are 15 years of age. This is a state form that you will take with you to the DMV when you are ready to take the state's Knowledge & Highway Signs test. Once you have passed these tests and a vision screening, you can apply for your instruction permit.

Can you email me my MV3001 form?

No. We will complete the MV3001 form and mail it to you so that you have an original signed copy from the instructor. You may also request to pick up this form at our office if you are in a hurry to get your instruction permit.

Can I get my MV3001 form early?

No. We will not issue you an MV3001 form until you are at least 15 years of age and have completed the 30-hour classroom / online course requirement mandated by Wisconsin law.

Does the MV3001 form expire?

The MV3001 form that we complete and sign for you is valid for 60 days from the date it was signed by an instructor. If you were issued an MV3001 form more than 60 days ago and haven't applied for your permit, contact the school immediately.

Can I take the DOT Knowledge and Highway Signs tests at Bay Driving Academy?

Yes. If you would prefer to take the Wisconsin DOT tests with us, we are licensed by the state to administer their tests.

What documents do I need to take to the DMV to apply for my Instruction Permit?

In addition to the completed MV3001 form that we will provide, you will also need to bring two forms of identification with you. Acceptable forms of identification include: original birth certificate or certified copy, social security card, Wisconsin State ID card or US Passport. The DMV with not accept your school ID as a form of identification.

How do I prepare for the Wisconsin DOT Knowledge and Highway Signs tests?

Students that successfully complete our driver education course should be adequately prepared to pass the state's tests. For students who would like to review prior to testing, we highly recommend reading theWisconsin Motorist Handbook and / or taking the online practice tests made available by Wisconsin DOT. The links for these resources can be found on our website.

Can I get extra help from the school if I don't pass the state tests?

Yes of course, that's why we are here.

Does Bay Driving Academy accept transfer students from other Driver's Education schools?

We will accept transfer students under two conditions: 1. The school you wish to transfer from is licensed by the State of Wisconsin and 2. The school you wish to transfer from will allow your transfer. If you meet these conditions, please contact us directly at 414-651-4444 to determine a transition plan and to make payment arrangements.

If I'm an adult over the age of 19, what options do I have with Bay Driving Academy?

At this time, we are not holding classroom instruction for those over the age of 19, however, you will be able to sign up for any of our online courses. If you are interested in Behind-the-Wheel instruction, please contact us directly at 414-651-4444 or at admin@BayDrivingAcademy.com.

Payment

When is my payment due if I registered for a classroom course?

A $100 deposit is required when registering for any classroom or related classroom combined course packages. The remaining balance is due on the first day of class.

When is my payment due if I registered for an online course?

Full payment for the online course or related online course packages is due when you regester.

How do I pay for a course I registered for?

We accept credit card payments via our website or you may pay with a personal check.

If paying with a check, please make the check payable to: "Bay Driving Academy" and clearly print the first and last name of the student(s) on the front of the check.

Checks can be dropped off or mailed to our office located at:

225 E. Fairmount Avenue, Whitefish Bay, WI 53217

In addition, student's can bring a check with their balance due, to their first classroom course.

What is your refund policy?

Bay Driving Academy will NOT refund any payment or tuition (or part of payment or tuition) if Bay Driving Academy is ready, willing, and able to fulfill its part of this agreement.

Behind-the-Wheel

When can I start my behind-the-wheel lessons?

You can start your behind-the-wheel (BTW) lessons once you have your instruction permit (temps).

When should I schedule my first BTW lesson?

Per the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, students MUST schedule their first behind-the-wheel lesson within 60 days of the date signed on the MV3001 form that you will receive from our school.

How do I schedule a behind-the-wheel lesson?

To schedule your BTW lessons you must login to our website and book your lesson using the online calendar.

How do I cancel a scheduled behind-the-wheel lesson?

To cancel a scheduled lesson, you must login to our website and select "CANCEL BTW" under the scheduling calendar. You will be charged a $50 late cancellation fee if you do not provide 24 hours advanced notice.

Can I schedule behind-the-wheel lessons before I get my permit?

No, we will not allow you to schedule any behind-the-wheel (BTW) lessons until you have been issued your instruction permit by the state. Additionally, we require that you enter your instruction permit number when scheduling a lesson.

Where do I go for my behind-the-wheel lessons?

The pickup and drop off locations for all behind-the-wheel lessons is outside the Whitefish Bay Public Library located at 5420 N. Marlborough Drive.

What if I miss a scheduled behind-the-wheel lesson?

You will be charged a $50 No Show fee. This fee may also be applied if you arrive for a scheduled BTW lesson without having a valid instruction permit with you.

Do I need to wear a facemask during my behind-the-wheel lesson?

Facemasks are encouraged, but not required to be worn at this time. Changes to this policy will be based on current CDC guidelines.

Should I cancel my Behind-the-Wheel lesson if there is bad weather?

Do not cancel your Behind-the-Wheel. Our priority is your safety and if we determine that conditions are not safe, we will notify you that we have canceled your Behind-the-Wheel. Please note that certain weather conditions provide us with an excellent opportunity to provide you with critical skills in a controlled environment (ie learning certain driving skills in a large empty lot during a snow event).

What do I do if I lose my instruction permit?

Contact us immediately. We will need to issue you a replacement MV3001 form so that you can apply for a duplicate instruction permit at the DMV. This applies to all students under 18 years of age.

Classroom

Where do you hold your classes for the 30 hour classroom program?

If we have enough students express interest in a classroom program, the classroom location will be determined by the number of students enrolled in the class. We must have a minimum number of students to hold a classroom program. We have found that nearly all students prefer to use our online course.

How long does it take to complete the 30-hour classroom program?

Classes are generally held Monday - Friday for three consecutive weeks. There are a total of 15 classes and each class is two hours long.

What if there are some days that I can't attend class?

All students that register for the classroom program are allowed a maximum of two excused absences. Any class time that is missed must be made up. Possible methods for make-up sessions may include: A written assignment on the topic missed, equal time in a private lesson, or attending a class with another group that is covering the material missed. Your instructor will work with you to determine how you can complete your make-up session.

Do I need to wear a facemask during the class?

Facemasks are encouraged, but not required to be worn at this time. Changes to this policy will be based on current CDC guidelines.

What do I need to bring with me to class?

Something to write with, a notebook or notebook paper, and a strong willingness to learn. All other classroom materials will be provided in class.

If I take the classroom course, will I be assigned any homework?

No, all course work will be completed during the two hour class.

Online

When can I start my online course?

If you are 14 ½ years old or older, you may start the course once we have received your payment.

How many online lessons can I complete per day?

Students may only complete two (1-hour) sessions per day.

How many days to I get to complete the online course?

You have 90 days to complete the online class once you begin the first lesson.

What happens if I don't complete the online course in 90 days?

You must request an extension and pay a $30 reinstatement fee every 30 days until you have completed the course.

What do I need to do after I complete the online course?

Once you have completed your online course, please contact us for your MV3001 form when you are ready to take the state's Knowledge and Highway Signs tests.
