Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Composers) for Friday, September 22, 2023 (Season 40, Game 10):

A fireworks display followed the April 27, 1749 premiere of a work by this man that had been commissioned by George II

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Deanna Bolio, a community outreach supervisor from Campbell, California (Yesterday’s total: $16,200)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Friday, September 22, 2023 (1)
Rob Kim, an attorney from Portland, Oregon (Yesterday’s total: $3,400)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Friday, September 22, 2023 (2)
Pam Sung, a physician-scientist from Amherst, New York (Yesterday’s total: $10,000)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Friday, September 22, 2023 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After being the only player to get Final Jeopardy! yesterday, Deanna Bolio currently holds a small advantage in this two-day total-point final over Pam Sung and Rob Kim. Anything can happen today, though—Hari Parameswaran came back from a distant third last Friday in order to win! Remember that today’s final scores are added to yesterday’s to determine today’s winner!

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2023 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

The work composed by Handel was titled “Music for the Royal Fireworks” and was initially just composed for wind instruments due to King George II’s preference for “martial instruments” (winds and percussion) and dislike of string instruments. (Handel would have preferred the strings be included.) Handel later re-scored the piece for a full orchestra to include the strings. Along with “Water Music”, these are Handel’s most famous pieces for orchestra.

To me, this is a relatively straightforward Final; I don’t mind this sort of Final on Day 2, as a way of checking whether the contestants did the harder “Day 2 of a final” math properly.

(Categories: Scotland; TV; “C” In Literature; That’s Just Offal; All’s Whale That Ends Whale; School Rhyme Time)

Missing the Daily Double didn’t faze Pam; she bounced back to sit second at the second break! Things were still very close after 30 clues.

Rob 3 correct 0 incorrect
Deanna 5 correct 2 incorrect
Pam 2 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Deanna would like to thank her family & her friends.
Rob would like to thank his parents, his friends, and his wife.
Pam would like to thank her family, her parents, and her husband.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Rob 8 correct 1 incorrect

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Thinking Of Ukraine; A Capital Offense; Stars & Stripes In Art; Do I Want That Named For Me?; May We Quote You?; Compound Adjectives)

Deanna got to the first Daily Double and got it correct! Both Rob and Pam had a chance to break Deanna’s runaway position, but Rob was too conservative on a Daily Double, and Pam didn’t take a shot on a $400 clue after Deanna gave an incorrect response. As it turned out, Deanna had a very slim runaway going into Final!

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Deanna 16 correct 4 incorrect
Rob 16 correct 4 incorrect
Pam 14 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Deanna $12,400
Rob $11,400
Pam $9,200

Deanna having the runaway was crucial, as Pam and Rob were the only correct players! Deanna did bet $0, though, and advances to Champions Wildcard!

Tonight’s results:

Pam $9,200 + $7,001 = $16,201 + $10,000 = $26,201 ($20,000) (Who is Handel?)
Rob $11,400 + $2,000 = $13,400 + $3,400 = $16,800 ($10,000) (Who is Handel?)
Deanna $12,400 – $0 = $12,400 + $16,200 = $28,600 (Winner, $35,000) (Who is Haydn?)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • I will say, considering how tight the margins were, this was a very well wagered Final Jeopardy from all three players.
  • 4 of the 5 clues in ALL’S WHALE THAT ENDS WHALE were repeated from the 2005 Ultimate Tournament of Champions.
  • Today’s box score: September 22, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Deanna $12,400 ($16,200) Rob $11,400 ($3,400) Pam $9,200 ($10,000))

Pam: If you double up, you have $28,400. Cover bet over Rob is $7,001. (Actual bet: $7,001)

Rob: If you double up, you have $26,200. If Pam bets to cover you and is incorrect, she has $12,199. Bet no more than $2,600 to stay ahead of that if you’re incorrect. (Actual bet: $2,000)

Deanna: You currently have $28,600 combined; the bet Pam can do is $28,400. Bet $199 or less and advance! (Actual bet: $0)
