Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Last week, Hari Parameswaran advanced to the Champions Wildcard competition beginning October 2. This week, nine more contestants return to the Alex Trebek Stage for a second chance to become a Jeopardy! champion. Elliott Goodman, Deanna Bolio, and Matt Walks are your first three.

If you’re looking for a quick rundown of what happened last week, I write a weekly recap column for Geeks Who Drink’s Questionist, released every Sunday. Yesterday’s column was titled “Second Chances, First Warning Signs.” Questionist also has a newsletter that you can sign up for!

Back to today’s game, I can see a couple of categories as ones being recycled: TALK LIKE A PIRATE and 1990s HITMAKERS both had some iterations run in the mid-2010s.

Each of Ernest Hemingway’s four wives received a book dedication: The Sun Also Rises was dedicated to Hadley Richardson, Death in the Afternoon was dedicated to Pauline Pfeiffer, For Whom the Bell Tolls to Martha Gellhorn, and Across the River and Into the Trees to Mary Welsh. There are some reports that Hemingway’s good friend F. Scott Fitzgerald once joked that Hemingway wanted a wife for each book he wrote.

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: American History; Book Titles In Other Words; Restaurant Hijinks; It Belongs In This Museum; Talk Like A Pirate; Enemies–Not A Love Story)

Thanks to the judges overturning a ruling of Ken’s, things went from a close game to a not-so-close game after 15 clues. However, things became close again after 30, thanks to Matt getting the Daily Double incorrect.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Matt 5 correct 1 incorrect
Elliott 5 correct 2 incorrect
Deanna 2 correct 1 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Matt has started dating someone who watched him on the show.
Deanna was disappointed to lose, but was happy Alex said she’d played “a helluva game”.
Elliott bet $928 for “good luck”.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Elliott 8 correct 3 incorrect
Matt 10 correct 2 incorrect
Deanna 7 correct 1 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Elliott $3,200
Matt $2,400
Deanna $2,400

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Latin America; 21st Century News; Science; Activists; 1990s Hitmakers; Word”le”)

The good news for Matt—he found both Daily Doubles. The bad news for Matt—he was definitely twice bitten, third-time shy. In a situation that probably called for a True Daily Double, Matt did not do so with 8 clues left on the board, and the money left on the table was enough to give Deanna a runaway going into Final!

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Deanna 19 correct 1 incorrect
Elliott 16 correct 4 incorrect
Matt 19 correct 5 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Deanna $19,600
Elliott $8,800
Matt $8,000

Deanna having a runaway was even more crucial, as Matt was the only player correct in Final! However, Deanna’s runaway means that she gets to come back on Thursday and Friday!

Tonight’s results:

Matt $8,000 + $7,999 = $15,999 (Who is Hemingway?)
Elliott $8,800 – $8,800 = $0 (Who C.S. Tolkien)
Deanna $19,600 – $926 = $18,674 (Who is Mark Twain?) (Finalist)
